CTF 66 Conducts First Joint Lightfish USV Launch During Cutlass Express 2026

During Cutlass Express 2026, Commander Task Force 66 (CTF 66) successfully launched a Lightfish Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) from a partner nation’s vessel for the first time, marking a significant milestone in joint maritime unmanned operations. The launch took place off the coast of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean as part of a dedicated unmanned systems training event with the Seychelles Navy.

The demonstration tested the Lightfish USV’s capabilities in open-ocean conditions with limited connectivity, highlighting its resilience and operational flexibility. CTF 66, U.S. 6th Fleet’s first fully uncrewed task force, integrates robotic and autonomous systems to enhance maritime domain awareness and strengthen interoperability with allied and partner navies.

Rear Adm. Kelly Ward emphasized that integrating unmanned systems directly into multinational exercises translates technological innovation into operational readiness. Cutlass Express 2026 brought together 19 partner nations to conduct maritime security training, including visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS), counter-illegal fishing operations, and medical response drills.

With 22 USVs currently operational and additional assets nearing readiness, CTF 66 continues expanding its autonomous fleet to enhance deterrence, improve situational awareness, and reinforce security across European and African maritime theaters.
