The Ghana Navy has marked a major milestone in the modernisation of its maritime security operations with the successful conduct of Exercise BLUE SCREEN, a drone-supported capability demonstration held at the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) on 20 February 2026. The exercise, spearheaded by the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), was the first to fully integrate quad-copter drones into a Special Operations Forces maritime scenario.

Exercise BLUE SCREEN concluded a four-month intensive training programme in drone operations conducted by SokoAerial Robotics, a long-standing partner of the Ghana Armed Forces in research and development, drone technology and electronic warfare. The demonstration showcased the ability to track and monitor targets using drones and software across both land and maritime environments, enhancing situational awareness and operational precision.

Delivering the keynote address, the Flag Officer Commanding, ENC, Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi, highlighted the growing importance of unmanned aerial systems in modern naval warfare. He noted that drone-enabled surveillance significantly enhances maritime interdiction operations while reducing risks to personnel.

The exercise demonstrated improved intelligence gathering, real-time coordination and mission effectiveness, particularly in countering piracy, smuggling, trafficking, illegal fishing and other transnational maritime threats. Exercise BLUE SCREEN sets a clear foundation for the future integration of unmanned systems into Ghana Navy operations, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding national maritime interests through technology-driven solutions.
