The Nigerian Army has taken another step toward strengthening its domestic defence industrial base with the induction of 15 locally produced Vanquisher Light Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs).

The vehicles were formally handed over on 4 March 2026, highlighting the Nigerian Army’s continued commitment to advancing indigenous defence technology as a key pillar for enhancing operational effectiveness and countering evolving security threats.

The platforms were manufactured by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) in collaboration with Vanquish Industries Limited and the Command Engineering Depot, reflecting a growing partnership between the country’s military institutions and local defence manufacturers.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, at the ceremony was the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi, who described the induction as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of self-reliance in military hardware production.

According to the COAS, indigenous defence innovation remains critical to achieving combat readiness and operational superiority, particularly within Nigeria’s complex security environment. He noted that platforms such as the Vanquisher Light APC are specifically designed to meet the operational demands of the Nigerian Armed Forces while strengthening the Army’s capacity to respond effectively to emerging threats.

Lieutenant General Shuaibu further emphasised that local production of military equipment contributes not only to national security but also to broader economic development. Domestic manufacturing reduces capital flight, stimulates the national economy, and supports Nigeria’s ambition to build a sustainable military-industrial ecosystem.

He described the handover ceremony as the first of many milestones in the Nigerian Army’s long-term strategy to promote home-grown defence technology and innovation.

The COAS also encouraged DICON to maintain its momentum in research, development, and production, stressing the importance of delivering high-quality military systems capable of meeting international standards.

Speaking during the event, the Director-General of DICON, Major General B. I. Alaya, expressed appreciation to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his continued support and confidence in DICON as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s defence industrial development.

He also commended the Chief of Army Staff for his sustained backing of indigenous defence initiatives, noting that such support played a decisive role in bringing the Vanquisher APC programme to completion.

Major General Alaya further urged other security agencies and branches of the armed forces to prioritise locally produced defence equipment, emphasising that increased patronage of indigenous products will accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s military-industrial sector and strengthen national strategic autonomy.
