Paramount South Africa has confirmed the deployment of advanced border security technologies in support of the Border Management Authority (BMA) at the Lebombo Port of Entry, as part of intensified efforts to reinforce border protection during the Easter holiday peak period.

The deployment comes at a time when South Africa’s borders continue to face a broad range of security challenges, including illegal crossings, human trafficking, contraband smuggling and other forms of transnational crime. These threats are often amplified during high-traffic travel periods, increasing pressure on border infrastructure and frontline personnel. In response, the BMA has strengthened operations at several strategic crossing points, with Lebombo emerging as a key focus area.

Situated in Mpumalanga along the vital N4 corridor, the Lebombo Port of Entry links South Africa and Mozambique and serves as one of the country’s busiest land gateways for both passenger and commercial traffic. The crossing is central to the legitimate movement of goods and people for trade, employment and tourism, but its high volumes and proximity to important regional nodes such as Maputo, Mbombela and the Kruger National Park also make it vulnerable to criminal exploitation.

To support BMA operations, Paramount has deployed three Maatla armoured border patrol vehicles together with its Vulture VTOL unmanned aerial system. Designed for demanding terrain and high-risk environments, the Maatla vehicles provide mobility and protection for rapid-response teams, while the Vulture drones deliver persistent aerial surveillance over remote areas of the borderline, particularly during night operations.

The integrated system enables aerial assets to detect suspicious movements, illegal crossings and smuggling routes, after which BMA ground teams can be directed rapidly to intercept and respond. These teams are also equipped with Paramount-supplied body-worn cameras, providing live communication feeds, improved coordination and enhanced operational transparency.

A key element of the deployment is the integration of live-streaming feeds from body-worn cameras with drone surveillance and vehicle-based platforms. This creates a real-time operational picture, allowing commanders and operators to monitor the location of suspected threats as well as the position of deployed teams, significantly improving situational awareness and accelerating decision-making in dynamic border environments.

According to Paramount South Africa, early operational feedback suggests that the deployed technologies have already contributed to the detection and apprehension of individuals attempting illegal crossings, as well as the interception of contraband.

Lindiwe Tshabalala, CEO of Paramount South Africa, said the company was proud to support the BMA in safeguarding the country’s borders during a particularly demanding period. She noted that the deployment demonstrated the practical value of advanced, integrated systems in live operational conditions and underlined the importance of evaluating such technologies in the rugged environments for which they are designed.

She further emphasised that Paramount’s Maatla vehicles and unmanned systems were purpose-built for precisely these conditions, adding that lessons drawn from the deployment would help shape future capability development and acquisition decisions.

The operation at Lebombo is focused on several objectives: maintaining aerial surveillance over the border zone, detecting and deterring illicit activity, managing traffic congestion along the N4 corridor, and preserving the sterility of the port through stronger access and exit control measures.

Paramount’s support to the BMA highlights the growing importance of integrated, technology-driven border security solutions. By combining mobility, surveillance and real-time command-and-control capabilities, the deployment offers a layered and responsive approach to securing South Africa’s borders while facilitating lawful trade and travel.
