Kenya’s 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5), deployed under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), continues to protect communities in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo while simultaneously responding to an Ebola outbreak affecting the Beni region.

Operating across the strategically significant localities of Mbau, Mandumbi and Oicha, the Kenyan contingent has maintained uninterrupted security operations despite heightened public health risks. Through continuous day and night patrols along the Beni–Mavivi–Mbau–Oicha corridor, the peacekeepers continue to deter the activities of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and other armed groups seeking to exploit the evolving security environment.

Rather than reducing operational activities, KENQRF 5 has successfully integrated comprehensive Ebola prevention measures into its daily operations. Personnel now routinely employ protective equipment, including face masks and gloves, while maintaining strict hand hygiene procedures. Patrol bases have established permanent handwashing facilities, and vehicles and operational equipment are disinfected following every mission to safeguard both military personnel and the civilian population.

These preventive measures have also strengthened relations with local communities. By consistently demonstrating disciplined health practices during engagements with civilians, the Kenyan peacekeepers have helped reinforce public confidence while encouraging the adoption of preventive behaviours aimed at limiting the spread of Ebola. Strong community engagement continues to support intelligence gathering and enhances cooperation in countering armed group activities.

Recognising that public health emergencies can create opportunities for insecurity, the contingent has deliberately maintained a visible presence in affected communities, ensuring that vulnerable populations remain protected from both disease and armed violence.

The ability to confront simultaneous security and humanitarian challenges has enabled KENQRF 5 to preserve stability across the Beni–Mavivi–Mbau–Oicha axis while reinforcing the broader objectives of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the region.

The deployment highlights the evolving nature of modern peace support operations, where military forces are increasingly required to balance traditional security responsibilities with humanitarian assistance and public health protection. Through professionalism, resilience and close cooperation with local communities, Kenya’s peacekeepers continue to demonstrate that effective peacekeeping extends beyond military operations to include the protection of human security in all its forms.
