The South African Air Force (SAAF), through Air Force Station Port Elizabeth and 15 Squadron Charlie Flight, played a vital role in humanitarian relief operations during Exercise CHARIOT, supporting communities affected by severe flooding across the Eastern Cape during May and June 2026.
Working in close partnership with the Gift of the Givers Foundation, the SAAF provided critical airlift support to isolated communities in Joubertina, Kouga Wilderness and the Baviaanskloof region after heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, damaged road infrastructure and cut off access to essential services.
To ensure humanitarian assistance reached the affected populations, 15 Squadron Charlie Flight deployed its BK117 helicopter to transport food parcels, toiletries and medical supplies into areas inaccessible by conventional transport. The missions were carried out by Major Cornelius Johannes Oberholzer (Pilot), Sergeant Carel Van Dalen (Flight Engineer) and Intelligence Officer Jonty Krugell, who accumulated a total of 7.5 flying hours during the operation.
One of the most demanding missions involved multiple supply drops to remote communities in the Baviaanskloof region. Despite operating in adverse weather conditions, including persistent rainfall, overcast skies and reduced visibility, the crew successfully completed numerous sorties, demonstrating exceptional professionalism, precision and resilience throughout the operation.
The humanitarian effort required close coordination between Air Force Station Port Elizabeth, disaster management authorities, the Gift of the Givers Foundation and local stakeholders to ensure the efficient distribution of emergency supplies.
The operation once again highlighted the South African Air Force’s commitment to supporting the nation’s civilian population beyond its traditional defence responsibilities. Through its rapid response capabilities, aviation expertise and logistical support, the SAAF continues to play a critical role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations across South Africa.
For many affected residents, the arrival of relief teams provided both immediate assistance and renewed hope while efforts continue to restore access to essential services. Exercise CHARIOT also demonstrated the importance of effective cooperation between military and civilian organisations, reaffirming the South African Air Force’s enduring commitment to serving communities with professionalism, compassion and dedication during times of crisis.
