The United States has delivered 48 Armored High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) to the Tunisian Army, reinforcing the long-standing defence partnership between the two countries and enhancing Tunisia’s operational mobility and force protection capabilities.
The official transfer ceremony took place at El Aouina Military Base in Tunis on 4 June 2026, attended by U.S. Ambassador Bill Bazzi alongside senior Tunisian and American military and civilian officials. The delivery represents another significant milestone in the extensive security cooperation between Washington and Tunis, which has expanded steadily over more than four decades.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the additional armored vehicles will improve the Tunisian Army’s ability to conduct joint and combined military exercises, security operations and rapid response missions while strengthening interoperability with U.S. and partner forces. The HMMWVs are expected to support a wide range of missions, including border security, counterterrorism operations, internal security, peace support activities and humanitarian assistance.
Tunisia remains one of the United States’ closest security partners in North Africa and holds the status of a Major Non-NATO Ally, reflecting the strategic importance of the bilateral defence relationship. Over the years, U.S. security assistance has included military equipment, professional military education, specialised training programmes, logistics support and initiatives aimed at improving the operational readiness of the Tunisian Armed Forces.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Bill Bazzi highlighted the enduring nature of the partnership and the strategic value of continued defence cooperation.
“Security cooperation is a cornerstone of the U.S.-Tunisian 229-year diplomatic relationship, and today’s transfer of 48 Armored HMMWVs to the Tunisian Army exemplifies the strength of our partnership,” Ambassador Bazzi stated. “Enhancing Tunisia’s armored capacity expands our shared ability to support regional stability, cooperative security efforts, and humanitarian assistance.”
The HMMWV, commonly known as the Humvee, has become one of the world’s most widely used tactical military vehicles. Designed to operate in demanding environments, the platform offers excellent cross-country mobility, modular mission flexibility and enhanced crew protection in its armored configuration. It can be configured for troop transport, command and control, reconnaissance, communications, logistics support and weapons integration, making it a highly versatile asset for modern armed forces.
For Tunisia, the acquisition comes as the country continues to strengthen its military capabilities to address evolving regional security challenges, including terrorism, illicit trafficking and border security concerns along its frontiers with Libya and Algeria. Improved mobility and protected transport assets will enhance the Tunisian Army’s ability to rapidly deploy forces and sustain operations across diverse operational environments.
The latest vehicle transfer also reflects the broader U.S. commitment to supporting regional stability in North Africa through long-term defence cooperation, capacity building and interoperability with partner nations. As both countries continue to expand military collaboration, the delivery of the new armored HMMWVs further strengthens Tunisia’s ability to respond to emerging security threats while contributing to regional peace, stability and multinational security cooperation.
