A high-level delegation of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), led by the Commander of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, arrived in Moscow on 28 July 2026 for an official visit aimed at strengthening military cooperation between South Africa and Russia.
The visit reflects the continuing defence relationship between the two countries and provides an opportunity for both armies to discuss practical cooperation, military education, and defence industry engagement.
The official programme began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow’s Alexander Garden, where the South African delegation paid tribute to Soviet soldiers who lost their lives during the Second World War. The ceremony, which is customary during official military visits, underscored the importance of historical remembrance and mutual respect between the two nations.
Following the ceremony, Lieutenant General Mbatha held discussions with senior officers at the Main Command of the Russian Ground Forces. According to official statements, the talks focused on expanding bilateral military cooperation and identifying new areas of collaboration aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities and combat readiness of both armies.
During the meetings, representatives of the two armed forces reviewed existing defence cooperation and explored opportunities for future joint initiatives. Both sides agreed to continue strengthening cooperation between their respective ground forces across a range of military activities, although specific projects were not publicly disclosed.
The visit also highlights the growing importance both countries attach to defence diplomacy and military-to-military engagement. South Africa and Russia have maintained longstanding defence relations that include officer exchanges, military education, dialogue on security issues and participation in multinational exercises.
As part of the official programme, the South African delegation is scheduled to visit several Russian military educational institutions, where it will receive briefings on officer training, professional military education and leadership development. The delegation will also tour Russian defence industry enterprises to gain insight into the country’s latest military technologies, production capabilities and defence manufacturing processes.
Such visits provide opportunities for the exchange of professional experience and allow military leaders to examine developments in doctrine, training and defence technology that may contribute to future cooperation.
The official visit comes at a time when South Africa continues to pursue a foreign policy that promotes engagement with a wide range of international partners, while Russia seeks to deepen defence and security cooperation with African nations through military diplomacy, training and defence-industrial collaboration.
Although no defence procurement agreements or new contracts were announced during the initial stages of the visit, the discussions demonstrate both countries’ commitment to maintaining regular military dialogue and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The South African delegation is expected to conclude its visit after completing its engagements with Russian military academies and defence industry facilities, further reinforcing the defence relationship between Moscow and Pretoria.
