The inaugural African Logistics and Communications Symposium (ALCS) has officially opened, bringing together military leaders, logistics specialists, communications experts and defence industry representatives from across Africa and international partner nations to enhance cooperation in logistics, communications and operational sustainment.
Organised by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) in partnership with the Ethiopian National Defense Force, the five-day symposium marks the first time that logistics and military communications have been integrated into a single continental forum. Delegates from 40 African nations are participating in discussions aimed at addressing common operational challenges while identifying innovative and scalable solutions through greater collaboration with governments, armed forces and industry.
The new symposium combines two longstanding annual events—the West Africa Logistics Conference and Africa Endeavor—creating a unified platform focused on strengthening strategic partnerships, improving interoperability and supporting long-term capacity building across the continent.
A major theme throughout the symposium is the critical role that logistics and communications play in modern military operations. Participants are examining ways to improve operational readiness, sustainment, crisis response and command-and-control capabilities while promoting the adoption of new technologies and data-driven approaches to defence planning.
The programme includes plenary sessions, expert panel discussions and technical breakout meetings covering subjects such as operations in contested environments, integrated crisis response, supply chain resilience, communications interoperability and cooperation with the defence industry. The discussions are designed to produce practical initiatives that participating nations can implement throughout the coming year.
The symposium also brings together representatives from the African Union, government agencies and industry partners, reinforcing the importance of public-private cooperation in strengthening defence capabilities and supporting broader regional security and economic development objectives.
By creating a continent-wide forum dedicated to logistics and communications, organisers aim to establish a sustainable professional network capable of advancing cooperation among African armed forces while promoting greater interoperability, resilience and operational effectiveness. The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on partner-led solutions and collaborative approaches to addressing evolving security challenges across Africa.
As AFRICOM’s principal annual forum dedicated to logistics and communications, the African Logistics and Communications Symposium is expected to become an important platform for strengthening military partnerships, sharing best practices and supporting the continued development of defence capabilities across the continent.
