The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) continues to maintain sustained operational pressure on terrorist elements across Niger State, employing intelligence-led air operations, persistent surveillance and close coordination with ground forces to disrupt hostile activities and restrict terrorist freedom of movement. Recent operations around Maburya, Sangeko, Kampani Bobi and adjoining areas of Mariga Local Government Area have highlighted the important role of airpower in supporting ongoing counterterrorism and counter-insurgency efforts within the Joint Task Force North West Area of Operations. Acting on credible intelligence and reports of suspicious movements, NAF aircraft conducted sustained armed reconnaissance and surveillance missions over identified areas of interest. During the operations, aircrews located suspected terrorist elements, including groups travelling on motorcycles and others moving with rustled cattle. As NAF aircraft-maintained surveillance over the area, terrorist elements were reportedly observed attempting to flee and seek cover. Following positive identification, selected targets were engaged from the air, disrupting their movements and activities.
The operations underline the increasing importance of combining timely intelligence with persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities and responsive airpower. By maintaining an aerial presence over areas where armed groups are known or suspected to operate, the NAF can rapidly detect emerging threats and provide critical support to troops operating on the ground. Close air-ground coordination remains particularly important across Nigeria’s extensive and often difficult terrain. Terrorist and criminal groups frequently exploit remote areas, forests and limited road infrastructure to move personnel, weapons and stolen livestock. Persistent aerial surveillance can significantly reduce their ability to exploit these conditions without detection. The latest missions also demonstrate the wider operational value of armed reconnaissance. Beyond engaging identified threats, the continuous presence of military aircraft can disrupt terrorist planning, restrict movement and complicate efforts by armed groups to assemble or establish temporary operating areas. For communities across Niger State and other areas affected by insecurity, sustained military operations are intended to create safer conditions for normal economic and social activity. NAF personnel continue to conduct missions during both day and night in support of surface forces tasked with protecting communities, infrastructure and property.
The Nigerian Air Force has repeatedly emphasised the importance of professionalism, vigilance and precision in the employment of airpower. Intelligence gathering, target identification and coordination with forces on the ground remain essential elements in ensuring that air operations are directed against confirmed threats. As security forces continue operations across the Joint Task Force North West Area of Operations, the NAF’s ability to combine surveillance, intelligence and rapid aerial response will remain an important component of Nigeria’s broader counter-terrorism strategy. Through sustained operational presence and close cooperation with ground forces, the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to denying terrorist groups freedom of action and supporting national efforts to restore lasting peace and security across Nigeria.
