The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified its airpower campaign against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities across Nigeria’s North-West, strengthening its air presence in Sokoto State as part of wider efforts to support ongoing joint security operations and deny hostile elements freedom of action. The enhanced deployment reflects the Service’s determination to sustain operational pressure on terrorist and criminal networks, improve aerial surveillance and reconnaissance, and maintain the capability to respond rapidly to emerging threats across the Joint Operations Area.

The strengthened air presence in Sokoto is particularly important given the complex nature of the security environment across the North-West. Terrorist and bandit groups frequently exploit difficult terrain, remote communities, forested areas and extensive movement corridors to evade security forces and conduct attacks. Their ability to disperse rapidly and operate across large geographical areas presents significant challenges for forces on the ground, making persistent surveillance and responsive air support increasingly important to ongoing security operations.

By leveraging the speed, reach, flexibility and precision of airpower, the NAF is positioned to complement ground operations by helping locate, monitor, disrupt and degrade hostile elements. Sustained aerial presence can restrict the ability of terrorist and criminal groups to move freely, reorganise, establish safe havens or conduct attacks against communities and security forces. At the same time, effective air support provides surface forces with greater operational opportunities to maintain pressure on hostile networks and consolidate gains achieved during joint operations.

The Sokoto initiative also highlights the growing importance of coordination between air and ground components in addressing asymmetric security threats. Effective intelligence sharing, surveillance, reconnaissance and operational coordination enable security forces to develop a clearer picture of hostile activity and respond more effectively to changing conditions. Such integration remains essential when confronting adversaries that rely heavily on mobility, concealment and dispersed operations.

The intensified campaign is consistent with the operational priorities of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who has emphasised the importance of maintaining a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower effects in cooperation with the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and other national security agencies.

As security operations continue across the North-West, the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to employing airpower as an integral component of Nigeria’s broader counter-terrorism and internal security strategy. Through sustained surveillance, rapid response capabilities and close cooperation with forces on the ground, the Service aims to degrade terrorist and criminal networks, protect vulnerable communities and contribute to the restoration of lasting peace and stability in Sokoto State, the wider North-West region and Nigeria as a whole.
