The Nigerian Army has begun deploying 600 personnel to India for specialised jungle and mountain warfare training, in an initiative aimed at improving combat effectiveness in difficult terrain and strengthening operational readiness. According to a statement issued on 23 October 2026 by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the deployment forms part of Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu’s efforts to develop a professional, adaptable and mission-ready force. The programme is intended to enhance the Army’s ability to confront security threats in forests, mountainous areas and other challenging environments, while supporting its wider responsibility to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protect lives and property.
The first contingent of 300 personnel departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday, 22 October, aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft, a C-17 and an Airbus A321. Major General UG Yusuf, Coordinator of the Nigerian Military Training Support and Advisory Team within the Army Headquarters Department of Army Training, attended the departure on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff. The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria was also present, highlighting the bilateral dimension of the training arrangement. Preparations are underway to transport the remaining 300 personnel to India, completing the planned deployment. The statement did not specify the duration of the course, the training locations or the departure date for the second contingent.
The specialised programme is expected to equip participating troops with advanced jungle and mountain warfare skills, improve their operational manoeuvrability and strengthen their ability to operate effectively in demanding conditions. The Army linked these objectives to efforts to deny terrorists, insurgents and other criminal groups safe havens in terrain that can complicate military operations. Its stated emphasis is on preparing personnel for the environments in which they may be required to deploy, with realistic training serving as a foundation for improved operational performance. The initiative also reflects Shaibu’s Command Philosophy, which prioritises operational effectiveness, personnel development and enhanced combat readiness. By investing in specialised instruction, the Army aims to strengthen the adaptability of its personnel and their capacity to respond to security challenges across varied operational settings.
Beyond its immediate training objectives, the deployment represents a further step in Nigeria–India defence cooperation. The participation of Indian Air Force transport aircraft and the presence of diplomatic and military representatives at the departure demonstrate coordination between the two countries in delivering the programme. For the Nigerian Army, the initiative combines overseas training opportunities with its stated ambition to sustain a resilient force capable of fulfilling national defence and internal security responsibilities. The announcement places particular emphasis on translating personnel development into greater readiness for operations in challenging environments. As the remaining contingent prepares to travel, the programme’s intended contribution remains clear: to improve the skills available to Nigerian commanders and troops tasked with confronting armed threats in difficult terrain. The Army presented the deployment as part of a continuing commitment to strengthening combat proficiency and maintaining a force prepared to defend national sovereignty and safeguard communities throughout the country.
The announcement does not detail specific joint procurement commitments, funding allocations or production targets associated with membership. Instead, it presents the alliance as a cooperation platform through which participating
